Why can’t we question God?

Have you ever had something happen in your life that made you question God? You might be wondering why he would allow a circumstance in your life to happen. Or maybe something didn’t work out the way you planned. Some are under the impression that we can’t question God. They have even asked, “Why can’t we question God?” In this article, we will address this question.

Can we question God?

Yes, we can question God. Although, most if not all of the answers to any of our questions are in the Bible. Job was a man who went through a storm worse than anyone on earth. The terrible things that he went through led him to question God. God even said that Job was a righteous man.

Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil. And he still maintains his integrity, though you incited me against him to ruin him without any reason.”

Job 2:3

Satan wanted to prove to God that all men were truly evil. Although, God knew Job’s heart. He knew that no matter the circumstances in his life that he would never curse or blame God.

What happened in Job’s life that caused him to question God?

In one day Job went through the worst circumstances that anyone has ever had. First Job lost all of his oxen and donkeys. While this might not seem that bad you have to remember that livestock was how Job supplied food and necessities for his large family. An enemy came into the land and stole the animals.

On the same day, fire fell from heaven and consumed all of Job’s sheep and some of his servants. Everyone who had worked for him alongside the sheep, as well as sheep perished. The same day enemies attacked Job’s camels and took off with them. That wasn’t till after they had murdered more of Job’s servants.

If you think that is a pretty rotten day things only get worse. Job’s sons and daughters were enjoying a feast. Suddenly a wind struck all four corners of the house and it fell killing everyone but a messenger.

At this point, Job had a mental breakdown. Wouldn’t you? If this all happened in one day there isn’t a person alive that wouldn’t feel the effects of these terrible circumstances.

Although, instead of cursing or blaming God for what had happened Job begins asking questions. He asks why he was even born. If this was what was going to happen to him he rather not ever been alive.

Job has some conversations with some of his friends and they all come to different conclusions on why all of these bad things happened. Although, no one was able to determine the real answer.

That was until God answered Job directly. God controls all things and knows all things. God holds all things together. He gives everyone the breath of life. He provides all things. He even causes the rain to fall on the righteous and the unrighteous.

that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.

Matthew 5:45

We as human beings have a limited amount of knowledge. We can’t remember everything that happened in the past and we definitely can’t predict the future. A God who knows all things before they happen certainly has the upper hand. God has the best things planned for us and even though we may not have an answer why certain things in our life happen, everything works out for his glory.

Where can we get answers when we have questions for God?
