Oh my God vs oh my gosh. What’s the difference?

We hear the phrase all of the time. “Oh my God!” From tv shows to movies, in stores and at restaurants. While it seems like a harmless saying why do people say Oh my God vs oh my gosh?

Should Christians say “Oh My God?”

For Christians we should abstain from saying “Oh My God”. While it may seem harmless there are actually rules on how we use God’s HOLY name. In the Bible there is a story about Moses. Most people who aren’t even Christian have heard about his name.

Based on Rabbinical Judaism Moses lived between 1391–1271 BC. During this time the Jewish people were in captivity in Egypt. God used the circumstances in Moses’ life to make him a tool to free his people from the enslavement of the Egyptians.

After the Hebrews escaped captivity Moses, with ultimate guidance from God, guided the people through the desert. Don’t worry, we are getting to the Oh My God Vs. Oh My Gosh argument. In approximately 1,300 BC God gave the Hebrews the 10 commandments which explicitly said not to use the Lord’s name in vain.

The 10 commandments

  1. You shall have no other gods before Me.
  2. You shall make no idols.
  3. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.
  4. Keep the Sabbath day holy.
  5. Honor your father and your mother.
  6. You shall not murder.
  7. You shall not commit adultery.
  8. You shall not steal.
  9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
  10. You shall not covet.

Using God’s name in vain can simply be defined as using his name in a way that isn’t respectful. If you don’t give proper respect and reverence to his HOLY name then you are using it in vain. Christians who love God should always be careful to follow his commandments. Otherwise, we will have to face consequences.

Oh my God vs oh my gosh.

Oh my gosh is a derivative from Oh My God. It is likely that people who respected God’s name didn’t want to use his name in vain. By saying “oh my gosh” or “oh my goodness” you stopping yourself from disrespecting the HOLY name of God.

Is it ok to say Oh My God?

If you are a follower of Christ we should not use the Lord’s name in vain. Our HOLY father loves us and he wants the best for us. By giving us commandments to follow he is guiding us down the path that leads to him.

Is it ok to say Oh My Gosh?

It can be said that “Oh My Gosh” is as bad as “Oh My God”. Although, based on how loving our God he isn’t sitting in heaven waiting for you to fail. Neither is he like a man. People tend to be petty. Although our God is righteous and just. God wouldn’t condemn you for saying something simple like “Oh My Gosh.”

Even if you make the mistake of saying, “Oh My God”, God is quick to forgive. There is no sin that you can commit that he won’t forgive. God is love. 1 John 4:16

In closing

Oh my God vs oh my gosh. What’s the difference? One is using the Lord’s name in vain. This is secular and if you’re not a believer it probably doesn’t matter to you. On the other hand if you are a Christian we are told to not be of this world. We should refrain from using God’s name in vain.
